Sword of the New World Newbie

I'm downloading this game as we speak, and I just wanted to know a few things. So if you can help me out a bit in-game and stuff by showing me or telling me everything and such like, upgrading equips, whats rare or not, and stuff like that, would be cool xDxD I just don't like playing a game where I'm loving the game but don't know what the heck to do.

But there is one question that is bothering me though. When I watch videos people make, I see two other characters following behind them. At first I thought it was other people, but then they always walk/run in a V form. Like the player is in front, but the other chars are behind him which makes a V form. I really don't get what thats all about. Can you play more than 3 characters?
